Area Code Updates
On September 20, 2007, the California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC) issued an Order that adopted an all-services Overlay plan for the 714 area code. With the new dialing plan, all calls dialed within the 714 area code will need to be dialed using a 1+10-digit pattern. Key dates are outlined below:

The Permissive Dialing Period for 1+10-digit dialing will begin on February 23, 2008 at 12:01AM. During the Permissive Dialing Period, all calls within the 714 area code may still be dialed using 7 digits but subscribers are encouraged to dial 1+10 digits.

Mandatory Dialing will begin on August 23, 2008 . All calls within the 714 area code must be dialed as 1+10-digits. The 714/657 area code Relief Plan will not affect rates or local calling areas. No existing numbers will change; all numbers will retain their current area code.

Starting September 23, 2008 , new telephone lines or services may be assigned numbers with the new 657 area code. All calls dialed within the new 657 area code will also need to be dialed using a 1+10-digit pattern. Activation of the new 657 area code will not result in any changes in Verizon rates or local calling areas.
