Area Code Updates
On April 24, 2008, the California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC) issued an Order that adopted an all-services Overlay plan for the 818 NPA. With the new dialing plan, all calls dialed within the 818 NPA will need to be dialed using a 1+10-digit pattern. Key dates are outlined below:

The Permissive Dialing Period for 1+10-digit dialing will begin on October 11, 2008 at 12:01AM. During the Permissive Dialing Period, all calls within the 818 NPA may still be dialed using 7 digits but subscribers are encouraged to dial 1+10 digits.

Mandatory Dialing Period will begin on April 18, 2009. All calls within the 818 NPA must be dialed as 1+10-digits. The 818/747 NPA Relief Plan will not affect rates or local calling areas. No existing numbers will change; all numbers will retain their current NPA.

Starting May 18, 2009, new telephone lines or services may be assigned numbers with the new 747 area code. Customers will be required to dial 1+ 747 digits. Activation of the new 747 NPA will not result in any changes in Verizon rates or local calling areas.
