For companies that have a private branch exchange (PBX) system, your PBX may block calls to some numbers and business associates who are assigned a new area code. To prevent call blocking, follow the three steps below:
Determine with your supplier whether your system can translate area codes that do not have "0" or "1" as the middle digit
Arrange to have your PBX reprogrammed, if necessary, to recognize such area codes as valid
Modify your PBX to employ 10-digit dialing for local calls, where required
Verizon establishes test numbers for PBX customers to call in order to test PBX lines during an area code change. Check with your Verizon representative to obtain a test number for your area.
